Foreword

Coating thickness gauges are used to measure the thickness of coatings on the surface of metal substrates. The measurement principle determines that different instruments are needed to test the coating thickness of different metal substrates. When purchasing, you need to consider from the actual test material, coating thickness, application areas, product performance, manufacturer service and other aspects. This article summarizes several tips for purchasing coating thickness gauges and recommends high-quality instruments to you.

Principle of Coating Thickness Gauge

There are 2 measuring principles for different materials. Selecting proper coating thickness gauges with proper measuring principles can be crucial to the testing results.Coating thickness gauges are divided into two types according to the measurement principle: magnetic method and eddy current method. The probes of coating thickness tester are supposed to be different and suitable for the tested material.

Magnetic method (Fe): Measurement of the thickness of non-magnetic coatings on steel, iron and other ferromagnetic metal substrates, such as paints, various anti-corrosion coatings, powder coatings, plastics, rubber, synthetic materials, phosphating films, chromium, zinc, aluminum, tin and cadmium.

Eddy current method (NFe): Measurement of the thickness of non-conductive coatings on copper, aluminum, stainless steel and other non-ferromagnetic substrates, such as paints, various anti-corrosion coatings, powder coating, plastics, rubber, synthetic materials, oxide and phosphate films.

YUSHI has high-recision painting thickness gauges with both 2 measuring principles. CM10FN and CM30FN can not only measure the coating on ferromagnetic metal substrates but also can measure the non-ferromagnetic substrates.

Selection According to Measurement Range

The users need to identify the appropriate range of coating thickness gauge according to the thickness of the coating. In general, paint coatings are relatively thin, so you can choose a gauge with a measuring range of 0-1500μm. However, if you want to measure flame retardant coatings or anti-corrosion coatings, it is recommended to purchase a coating thickness gauge with large measuring range, such as the YUSHI CM10FH, which has a large measuring range and a probe measuring range of up to 10,000 μm, making it ideal for measuring thick coatings.

Performance of Coating Thickness Gauge

The performances of the coating thickness gauge performance determines the failure rate and service life of the product we use, both of which will affect the efficiency of the work and the reliability of the data. Mainly includes product characteristics, operating temperature, measurement range, reading accuracy, measurement parameters, etc., in the selection must ensure that these points in line with the product application requirements.

YUSHI CM series paint thickness meters have many outsatanding features and have passed IP67,IP68 test. That means our paint gauges can be used in harsh environment.

The YUSHI CM30 Coating Thickness Gauge is an all-round, multi-functional coating thickness gauge based on the CM10 series. It can be equipped with individual probes, and the user can select one or more probes as required. 2.4-inch color LCD display, storage of 200,000 measurements, and IP68 tested for water and dust resistance.
