Test Block Material Selection

1. Carbon Steel(1018 Steel): This is the standard material for most of YUSHI test blocks, which is known for its standard acoustic characteristics and durability. Carbon steel test blocks are most widely used in Ultrasonic testing and inspection.
2.Stainless Steel(304 Stainless Steel): This kind of material provides excellence corrosion resistance, making the stainless steel an ideal material for harsh environment or applications with high demand of rust prevention.
3.Aluminum Alloys(6063 and 7075):Test blocks made of Alluminum alloys have great acoustic transmission and have lighter weight than the steel test blocks.
4.Special Alloys:Special alloys such as 6AL4V Titanium can be used in specific applications. These special alloys combine high strength with corrosion resistence.

Critical Importance of Selecting Proper Test Block
Instrument Calibration:Ultrasonic thickness gauges and flaw detectors need to be calibrated rely on the standard test blocks. Without accurate calibration as reference, the measuring error will occur.
Sound Velocity Calibration: Different materials possess distinct acoustic propagation characteristics. Using test blocks that match the acoustic properties of the material being measured ensures accurate sound velocity calibration of the instrument, which is crucial for thickness measurement or flaw detection.
Industry Standard Compliance: Numerous industries adhere to strict quality standards, requiring regular calibration of instruments using certified reference blocks. The test blocks produced by YUSHI comply with internationally recognized standards such as ISO, ASTM, and AWS, assisting enterprises in meeting these compliance requirements.
Establishment of reference sensitivity: This is one of the most critical functions of the test block. Reference sensitivity is the baseline gain level set using a specific artificial reflector (such as a flat bottomed hole or side drilled hole) in the test block to standardize the detection capability of the ultrasonic flaw detector.
DAC/TCG Curve Generation: Test blocks with multiple reflectors at different depths are essential for creating distance amplitude correction (DAC) or time correction gain (TCG) curves. These curves compensate for the natural attenuation of sound waves over distance, ensuring that defects of the same size can produce similar signal amplitudes regardless of their depth within the material.
Defect Sizing Verification: For some applications, the block comparison method is still a reliable and code approved technique for evaluating defect size, especially for defects in the near-field.
