About Two Layers of Paint On Asbestos Sheet
1.High Solid Epoxy Paint
Epoxy coating consists of epoxy resin, body pigment and curing agent. It can be widely used indoors and outdoors on various surfaces of light metal and cement structures.
The material is coated with a special high solid epoxy primer to improve adhesion. Its good anti-corrosion and water resistance makes it suitable for flooded areas. Good drying and curing properties make it particularly suitable for water conservancy construction materials.
2.Polymer Anti-corrosion Top Coat
The top coat requires good corrosion resistance. Polymer anti-corrosion paint has good acid, alkali and salt corrosion resistance and excellent water, oil and weather resistance. It is widely used in environmental protection equipments, sewage treatment projects and other anti-corrosion engineering coating of underground or ground steel and concrete structures.
Tested Workpiece
Our customer is engaged in water industry. We need to measure the thickness of both 2 layers of paint on the asbestos sheet.
Base Material:Fiberless cement asbestos sheet,formed by scraping method,with two layers coating.
First Layer:High Solid Epoxy Paint.
Second Layer:Polymer Anti-Corrosion Top Coat.

The quality and thickness of the primer and topcoat are very important to the performance of the asbestos sheet and relate to its longevity. An excessively thin coating is more likely to be damaged than an excessively thick one, because an excessively thin coating is prone to leakage and faster penetration of water and oxygen. For harsh usage environments, it is necessary to increase the thickness of the coating appropriately, but too thick a coating can sometimes lead to wrinkling. This results in poor adhesion of the coating to the substrate and easy peeling. To prevent wrinkling, the coating process should be standardized to control the thickness of each layer.
Measurement Analysis
Portable ultrasonic thickness gauge adopts ultrasonic principle, easy and fast measurement. Coating thickness can be inspected at any time, and measurement results can be stored for analysis.
We use the YUSHI PM5 Gen2 Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge to visually and accurately determine echo conditions from real-time A-scan waveforms. Coupled with a 15-20M single-crystal delay line probe, the ultrasound enters the coating through couplant and reflects off surfaces of varying densities. Coating thickness readings are obtained by measuring the time it takes for the ultrasound to propagate from the probe to the coating-coating/coating-substrate interface and back again. The time is divided by 2 and multiplied by the speed of sound through the coating to give the coating thickness.

In order to mesaure and display the thickness of both 2 layers of paint simultaneously, we can add Double-Layer measurement mode to the PM5 Gen2. This measurement mode is one of the powerfull software options of PM5 Gen2 high-precision thickness gauge. Using double-layer measurement mode can adjust each layers' waveform and measure 2 layers thickness at the same time. Actually,there are 16 software options that can make PM5 Gen2 become a intelligent and versatile thickness tester for vairous industries.


Tested with YUSHI PM5 Gen2 Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge equipped with 15M delay line probe, the measured value is stable, the echo is clear and the result is accurate.
As a waterproof and anti-corrosive material, the protective layers of fiberless cement asbestos sheets, primer and topcoat, play an important role.
