In the field of industrial testing, non-destructive measurement technology is gradually replacing traditional contact tools. The PM5Gen3 ultrasonic thickness gauge is YUSHI Instruments' third-generation intelligent detection equipment, which successfully solves the problem of accurate measurement of metal pipe wall thickness under thick rubber coating coverage through low-frequency sound wave penetration technology. This article analyzes the innovative principles and application value based on device testing scenarios and technical parameters.
Technical Structure & Core Paraments
The PM5Gen3 ultrasonic thickness gauge (brand: YUSHI Instruments) adopts a standard working mode and has a built-in preset sound speed value of 5920m/s (V-5920m/s), which is directly related to the calculation model of the propagation speed of ultrasonic waves in metal media. The physical image of the equipment shows that its probe is designed with a single crystal transducer, which can effectively penetrate a rubber coating with a thickness of 20mm to measure the thickness of the substrate. The operation interface integrates single point measurement and continuous scanning mode, and the display screen presents real-time sound velocity correction values and thickness data, with an error range controlled within ± 0.05mm.

The Principle of Rubber Coating Penetration Measurement
We measured the thicknesses of rubber coating and metal substrate separately. The results are shown as below:
The thickness of rubber coating is 8.65mm.

The thickness of metal substrate is 4.11mm.

Rubber and other elastic coatings can cause deviations in contact measurements. PM5Gen3 achieves non-contact detection through the following steps:
Acoustic coupling: Apply coupling agent evenly on the coating surface to eliminate air gaps;
First wave recognition: After the transmitted pulse penetrates the coating, the first wave signal reflected from the bottom surface of the substrate is received;
Time difference calculation: based on the formula D=VT/2 (D is the thickness of the substrate, V is the ultrasonic velocity of the substrate, and T is the propagation time of the ultrasonic wave inside the substrate)
Multiple wave calibration: Verify data consistency through multiple calculations of bottom waves.
Typical Application Scene and Standard Operation
PM5Gen3 exhibits significant advantages in the inspection of petrochemical pipelines. On site testing data from a certain refining enterprise shows that when testing DN200 steel pipes (covered with 3mm chloroprene rubber), the equipment completes positioning within 3 seconds, and the measurement value has an error of only 0.03mm compared to the destructive testing result. The operation should follow:
- The probe should be in vertical contact with the surface of the object being measured
- Need to evenly apply coupling agent
Measurement Results
The measurement results are very stable and have high repeatability.
