Measurement Background

The application of ultrasonic transmission technology in the field of geological materials such as rocks and minerals has gone deep into the precise definition of their mechanical properties. These techniques have been used to quantify the physical parameters of geological materials, such as hardness, elastic module and grain structure. When these tests are performed using ultrasound transmission technology, low-frequency probes can usually be used because they are more penetrating and can be operated on prepared samples with two parallel and flat surfaces.

Ultrasonic thickness measurement technology can not only non-destructive evaluate the thickness of these materials, but also reveal the changes and characteristics of their internal structures, which is of great value for geological exploration, rock mechanics research and reconstruction of paleogeological events. Through ultrasonic thickness measurement technology, geologists can more accurately understand the physical properties and stability of geological materials, and provide strong technical support for the prediction and prevention of geological disasters, the exploration and development of mineral resources.

Measurement Instrument Selection

The measuring instrument adopts Yushi ultrasonic thickness gauge PM5 Gen2, whose high precision and performance can meet the customer's measurement needs for rock thickness and sound velocity.
In the selection of probes in rock testing, lower frequency probes are generally used. Because low-frequency ultrasound can penetrate thicker rock layers more effectively, while reducing wave distortion caused by differences in rock internal structure and composition, so as to ensure the accuracy and stability of measurement results. At the same time, clear and undistorted wave feedback is also crucial for accurate calculation of rock thickness and sound velocity. Therefore, when preparing for rock sample testing, it is necessary to select the appropriate probe to ensure the efficiency of the measurement process and the accuracy of the results.
The rock samples received this time are blocky and similar to marble, which can be tested by PM5 Gen2 ultrasonic thickness gauge with 0.5mhz contact probe.

Measurement Process

Rock samples to be measured can be prepared in various shapes and sizes as long as they have two flat, parallel surfaces that can be coupled by probes. Generally, the sample is cylindrical or block, and the diameter or width of the sample should be greater than the wafer size of the probe used.

In the process of measurement, in order to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the results, attention should be paid to the adjustment of parameters, especially silencing. Due to the characteristics of rocks, the use of low-frequency probes will have a wide initial pulse and clutter, which will greatly interfere with the measured wave shape when the gain is high. In this case, it is necessary to adjust the silencing parameters, increase the silencing appropriately, hide the interfering wave shape, and make the instrument point to the bottom echo of the sample correctly.
